I used to pronounce hanyu pinyin ‘b,’ ‘d,’ and ‘g’ like the heavier versions at the beginning of the English words ‘boy,’ ‘dog,’ and ‘got.’ But I taught at ‘Tunghai University’, written ‘Donghai’ in pinyin, and lived in Taipei, ‘Taibei’ in pinyin.
